Structural Biology Program
In the twentieth century, Life Sciences became popular areas of study and the most concerned research for humans in the world. The native biological functions of protein, translated from its corresponding gene, were still unknown although a huge number of gene sequences have been decoded nowadays. Hence, the Structural Biology Program was organized by College of Life Sciences from NTHU, incorporation with Academia Sinica and National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center, for cultivating and training talented scientists in the proteomics research after the sprouting of genomic fields. Structural Biology Program is an applied science, which consists of chemistry, physics, biology, bioinformatics and so on. The biophysical methods (NMR, X-ray diffraction and mass spectrometry, etc.) are the most common research tools that we used to determine the three-dimensional structure of macromolecules accurately, with atomic-scale resolution, in order to explore the structure-activity relationships of biological molecules for the further application to drug medicine. The cooperation of computation and multifaceted biological training allows us to analyze the biological data, for instances, the developments of genomics and proteomics studies are based on the information provided by protein structures and their corresponding DNA sequences. Most of the research is dealing with Genomics, Proteomics, Metabolomics and Lipidomics in the post-genomic era, yet structural biology research plays an important role on top of them in order to design an effective drug based on these information and research results, or to explore the molecular evolutions, systems and other important issues so as to provide students a basic and applied level of training. The function of a biological molecule can be comprehensively understood, without speculation, by the aid of computer simulation and analysis of biological information, which provide a direct experimental evidence between the function and its corresponding three-dimensional structure of biological molecule. The purposes of this program are to develop a talent with multidisciplinary structure-biological knowledge, to provide a program which integrates the modern biology and physics, to solve the structures of macromolecules based on the advanced techniques, thus to understand its function in the cellular and molecular levels.
 
 
Medical Biotechnology Program
National Health Research Institutes (hereinafter referred to as the NHRI)and National Tsing Hua University (hereinafter referred to as NTHU) have jointly organized a Medical Biotechnology Program, by offering the master and doctoral courses, with the purpose of promoting industrial development and raising the academic standards in Hsinchu area. From the establishment of Institute of Molecular Biology in 1973, presided over by Academician Zhen-Zhong Yang, to the establishment of College of Life Science in 1991, academy and research was the key issues to boost up the biotechnology in Taiwan. Many professionals in the area of biotechnology have been recruited thereafter. In 2002, the College of Life Sciences was restructured into a department and four Institutes, the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology, the Institute of Molecular Medicine, the Institute of Bioinformatics and Structural Biology, and the Institute of Biotechnology. The four Institutes offer graduate programs (Master and Ph.D.) in a variety of research areas. The milieu of medical biotechnology field of NHRI used to be the top research institution with numerous outstanding experts allocated across different groups of researches, and they work intimately with NTHU after relocated to Chunan area in 2004. The international competiveness of the Medical Biotechnology Program can be increased if there is cooperation between the four institutes of the College of Life Sciences and NHRI.
